Recently we had the pleasure to visit a family homestead in nearby Mars Hill, NC called The Farmers Hands. The owners Sebastiaan and Ariel Zijp open up their home to guests and perform a variety of awesome cooking classes throughout the year. We took them up on their Farm To Table cooking class and boy did they deliver!
Upon arrival, the warm and friendly couple took us for a tour of their beautiful property. On the menu for the evening were brussel sprouts, roasted potatoes and garlic, pickled red onions, cabbage and more, all of which come directly from their gardens. Since we took the class in the middle of the winter, their grounds were not as robust as they would have been during the warmer times of the year, but there was still plenty of fare to be picked.
We made our way through their gardens then got to see their rabbits, chickens and inoculated shiitake mushroom logs. This was a hit with our two children who now want to replicate what they got to see on our own property. We hope to make that happen soon for them, but may just have to return for another class until we do.
After a bit we made our way into their home and gathered around the kitchen island. Their home is also amazing, with a cozy warmth that only a refurbished farmhouse can offer. From the original wood floors to their canned goods on display, their home really sets the stage for an enticing culinary experience.
As though the evening wasn't already fun enough, we then got to watch a masterful chef do his thing. Dish after dish was tasteful and delicious, and he even got us hooked on anchovies! (at least in his homemade Caesar dressing for now).
Our somewhat picky kids even raved about the food, and to us that's the mark of a great chef - someone who enjoys what he does. makes great food and can get others interested in what they do, all of which chef Sebastiaan did with ease.
For those looking for a fun evening out look no further. Skip the restaurants for a night and make a reservation at The Farmers Hands. We promise that you won't be disappointed!
Until next time. Cheers!
